Marwell Zoo is a 140-acre (57Â ha) zoo situated in Colden Common near Winchester, in the English county of Hampshire. It is owned and run by the registered charity Marwell Wildlife. The zoo is home to 1,208 animals of 149 species. The charity undertakes a range of educational and conservation activities, with a particular focus on Africa in addition to work from its base.
The zoo was founded by Dr John Knowles, opening in 1972. He sold a Rolls-Royce of his to buy some zebras. It was one of the earliest zoos in Europe to place an emphasis on animal conservation. Within a few years of its establishment, it became an important breeding centre for several species, some (e.g. the Mongolian wild horse) already extinct in the wild, others (e.g. the snow leopard and Siberian tiger) close to extinction.
Love this place. Annual pass well worth it, you also get a free visit to 6 other zoos in UK. It's a large zoo and at a slow pace you can be here for the entire day. Some new things including Tropical House, totally amazing!! Good well cared for animals, staff are all so friendly and helpful. Good food, but you have a lot of places to eat your own food inside and outside areas.

Another great day out with our grandchildren and daughter. I am disabled and use a class 1 mobility scooter. Went round the park easily without any problems. The staff were very helpful. I've had a great time and I know thr kids did. There are new 3 including the tropical house. Little difficult getting the scooter in but worth it.

I'm a regular visitor to the zoo with an annual pass. Great for a dry day as the zoo is spread out over a large area and there isn't much cover. Can easily spend the whole day slowly meandering through. Decent and reasonably priced restaurant, although very busy at peak times. And very good range of animals from the large, tigers, giraffes, zebras etc down to small meerkats, penguins, birds. Plenty to see and to keep the little ones in wonder.

Ever since I was a child I have loved this place. I have fond memories of riding the zoo train to see santa clause and watching the giraffes give birth. I visit maybe once every few years (would like to go more often) and I always have an amazing time. We visited yesterday and it was nice and quiet. It's nice to see the staff about their work and watch the well welled after animals about their days. It's not like normal zoos, the animals are in quite large areas for the most part and are not often always fully visible but it's nice to see they have some space. The staff are always friendly and the park is always well kept it not a bit dated and in need of a bit of an overhaul which looked like it was going on in the far side of the park. The cafe is a bit pricey so I recommend a packed lunch but there is plenty of seating and picnic areas.

Really enjoy the layout which provides options for long/short visits. Really like the new Tropical exhibition (esp the sloth) and the lovely building it is in. It feels like the old one had more residents (even if they were insects) so hopefully we can see the return of some of those. The tiger (is there more than one?) was in a very physical mood so got more of a close-up than at any zoo I have been to before. Awesome!!

We are full time members and love visiting there. We try and go at least every 5 to 6 weeks. There is a great variety of animals on show and they recently introduced a few more different ones. The zoo is huge a spread out over a large area so put good shoes on. In the last year to 18 months two new buildings have been erected to house various animals making a total of 4 enclosures where you get a great chance to wonder around with the animals and birds which are roaming free within them. The place is very popular with parents and gets very busy in school holidays. There is a small train which goes round part of the park and a small carriage which goes around other parts of the park. I don't know the prices of these but are very popular. There is a fairly reasonable priced cafe where you can get meals and drinks plus there is other stalls selling ice cream, snacks and drinks around the zoo area. There is also lots toilets which are clean and tidy. Overall the whole zoo is well looked after and well maintained. Entry prices are reasonable. Buying a yearly subscription works out well as it gives you a discount of you recent visit off the price. If you go regularly it's pays for itself. The staff all seem happy and friendly and try and help people when they can. A great experience overall

Visited without children Spent almost the whole day there. Zoo spread over a huge area so lots and lots of walking. However there is a railway - but was out of service and a road train which was running A few places to pick it up and it is timetabled. Very clean and tidy Lots of sitting areas and lovely play areas set up for children of different ages. Several places to eat but I took pack lunches. Coffee expensive. Though some animal enclosures were empty there was still lots of animals to see. With the newest installation of the tropical house you can feel the zoo is undergoing a huge redevelopment project bringing it into the 21st century. The staff was helpful and knowledgeable. It was a lovely visit and would recommend a trip. Looking forward to taking my grandchildren ☺

It's probably the biggest zoo in Hampshire, but it's nothing compare to London zoo. The prices are similar though. It improved in the past few years and the new Tropical house is very good. I have been many times and often the animals tend to spend a lot of time in their houses instead of outside. There are no lions or crocodiles, but there are some lovely giraffes and a snow leopard. The penguins enclosure is in need for a refurbishment. The restaurant and gift shops are very good. Do not visit on a rainy day. Not worthy.

Great place for your family day out. Spent here good 5 hours. The local restaurant is good, food is quite nice. For burger lovers there is outside BBQ option. They could have more WC, we found just 2. Some more toilets towards the end would be great as our little ones need to use toilet more often.

We have been here a few times over past few years - albeit more since we have had a small person with us! Price is about going rate for entry to a zoo - we found that we got free entry as we have a season pass for another zoo so well worth checking. The zoo is laid out so that you can do a sort of circular route starting with the penguins. There is plenty to do for a full day although you might struggle to keep dry if its raining. The land train is a good option if you want to go all the way round first - it leaves from the gift shop near the beginning and makes a few stops as it goes round. Since last going the zoo has also opened up the tropical centre which is nice (and also dry and warm on cold days!) Also we visited the lemur walk through area (which I cant remember being there last time) which was really good - but note, its only open at certain times. Cafes and shops are OK but as with most of these places if you have a small child and they eat like a pig then you are better off taking a picnic. Warm drinks arn't cheap (Hot chocolate cost us £2.55) so if you have a buggy its worth throwing the Thermos in with everything else! Worth a visit if you (or the little ones) love zoos.

We love coming to Marwell and have been several times as varying sized groups. There is a good selection of animals on show but most are smaller sized animals, but they do have Giraffes, Tigers, lots of large hoofed animals and a Snow Leopard There are a few enclosures where you get to wonder around with the animals and birds which are roaming around with in the enclosure which my boys enjoy a lot. The zoo is big and spans a large area so make sure you wear good walking shoes or trainers. There is a small train which goes around a section of the park which is popular with the little ones. And there are also a few play areas for kids to burn off energy while the adults get to rest up for a while and grab a coffee. This place gets very busy during school holidays, but it doesn't seem packed due to the size of the park, unless your in one of the walk around enclosures which can get a little cramped during busy times. The cafe is reasonably priced and there are other stalls selling drinks, snacks and ice cream dotted around the zoo. The toilets are clean and tidy and you are never far from one and plenty of tables and benches can be found to stop and eat a picnic. Staff are friendly, informative and try and help however they can. Overall the zoo is well looked after and well maintained, although some of the older enclosures could probably do with an overhaul as they are beginning to look a little tired. Entry costs are reasonable especially when you account for being able to spend a full day on site, especially in good weather. A great experience overall

Love this zoo! We always go with our 6 year old girl & she adores it. It's not got a theme park so is a lovely relaxing walk around with great access, amenities any a good selection of animals. Best of all no queues! The hotel attached is also well worth a stay... fantastic restaurant, staff and a small pool and jacuzzi.

Really lovely zoo. I'm not a fan of zoos generally, but the animals seemed pretty happy and well looked after. Really big site, so the truck and train helped save little legs. We went in the pouring rate, so they indoor sections were well used! The play areas looked nice (though it was far too wet for the kids to enjoy them). Was a nice day out despite the rain and fairly reasonable too compared to other attractions.

Awesome place for family day out animal talks & events. The zoo has over 170 exotic & endangered species from big animals like tigers, giraffes, zebra, antelope, rhinos down to small meerkats, penguins, birds, snails to mention a few. A brand new £8m installation - Tropical House a must visit for everyone. Great feeling of the zoo undergoing a huge redevelopment. The zoo is huge spread over 140 acres so wear good walking shoes or trainers. There's a free road train which goes round you can hop on & off anytime. There's also a small rail train this one you have to pay. Large free car park, staff directing you on where to park. Wheelchair accessible entrances to every animal enclosure, gift shop, restaurants & toilets. Lots of sitting areas with benches & tables for picnics and resting. Clean and tidy toilets around the zoo just look up on the map you are never far from one. Restaurants with cooked food, and drinks, ice cream, snacks and drinks sold in stalls around well laid out. Very helpful, friendly and knowledgeable staff who go above and beyond to help. 10/10 Played tombola on our way out we didn't win. Great experience! Highly recommend.

Gets very busy at weekends and school holidays but well worth a visit. Animals are well cared for and the new tropical house while somewhat empty still is an incredible project. Always good to see animals in places like this looking well cared for. Good visitor facilities with plenty of places to get food and drink and plenty of toilets. Free road train is excellent (we were visiting with my mother who despite being sprightly at 72 suffers after a few hours of walking). Staff are excellent, friendly and helpful.

Really like Marwell Zoo, have been going here since I was really little. We now have a season pass so find that we can pop down when we have a little bit of time. The animals seem really well looked after and they are involved in lots of valuable breeding programs, helping to protect species from extinction. They have recently opened the tropical house which is really special. although I do miss some things about the old one. All in all a great visit

Not been here for a few years and it did not disappoint. Beautiful park with the animals having plenty of space and well cared for. Staff are passionate and willing to answer any questions you may have. Highly advised to bring your own food as it is expensive. A must if love the wild side
