Sverd i fjell (English: Swords in Rock) is a commemorative monument located in the Hafrsfjord neighborhood of Madla, a borough of the city of Stavanger which lies in the southwestern part of the large municipality of Stavanger in Rogaland county, Norway.
The monument was created by sculptor Fritz Røed from Bryne and was unveiled by King Olav V of Norway in 1983. The three bronze swords stand 10 metres (33 ft) tall and are planted into the rock of a small hill next to the fjord. They commemorate the historic Battle of Hafrsfjord which by tradition took place there in the year 872, when King Harald Fairhair gathered all of Norway under one crown. The largest sword represents the victorious Harald, and the two smaller swords represent the defeated petty kings. The monument also represents peace, since the swords are planted into solid rock, so they may never be removed.

Lovely location on the shore with 3 huge swords cast from metal and inserted into the earth. Picnic benches and lots of space to sit out. Small car park next to the site. Limited information on the swords at the site, could do with more visible information on the swords and the artist in my opinion. While impressive, lack of information or other attractions means you probably won't spend too long once you've taken your photos and eaten your picnic.

Famous attraction close to stavanger city center. Plenty of parking spaces and a nice place by the beach to just walk around or have a picnic.

It was great, until I lose my phone here! So no photos to show for it. There's not really any good parking other than at the roadside. So be wary if you are renting a vehicle! When we visited, there was a medieval market too, just up the road. Well worth a visit if you're wasting some time on the way to the airport.

Good access by car or bicycle. Parking. Ice cream booth (season only). Picnic space, beach, diving point. Good views on the monument and around.
