The Powerhouse Museum is the major branch of the Museum of Applied Arts & Sciences (MAAS) in Sydney, the others being the historic Sydney Observatory at Observatory Hill, and the newer Museums Discovery Centre at Castle Hill. Although often described as a science museum, the Powerhouse has a diverse collection encompassing all sorts of technology including decorative arts, science, communication, transport, costume, furniture, media, computer technology, space technology and steam engines.
The museum has existed in various guises for over 125 years, previously named the Technological, Industrial and Sanitary Museum of New South Wales (1879–1882) and the Technological Museum (August 1893 – March 1988). As of 2022, the collection contains over 500,000 objects collected over the last 135 years, many of which are displayed or housed at the site it has occupied since 1988, and for which it is named – a converted electric tram power station in the Inner West suburb of Ultimo, originally constructed in 1902 and is a well-known and popular Sydney tourist destination. The Federation-style building is listed on the New South Wales Government's State Heritage Register.
It's was over the moon. Kids love it. Ticket is very reasonable. Please take long time to visit. Kids will get stuck in some of them. It's cover a vast area of interest. There is a light show/activity. It's awesome. Highly recommended Can see different ages of plane. Locomotives few motor vehicles too. There is a section there interactive activities available. It's a maze. Loved it. Will visit again.

Beautiful building, loved the space exhibition. The F-1 rocket engine is absolutely massive and very impressive! The zero gravity demo was very convincing, just make sure you are sober when entering. One of the lovely staff allowed us a sneak preview of a new exhibition, very cool! Museum stores are usually the highlight of our visit and this one didn't disappoint.

A large, smartly curated and entertaining transport and design museum with an incredible variety of exhibits in a towering historic building - including full size planes and trains. Plan for at least a half day here, more if this subject matter is your thing. Loved the excellent Modern design exhibit that compared decades of Apple designs to earlier Braun and Olivetti products. The exhibit of a 1920’s diving diva’s elaborate costumes was great too. Well worth the trip.

Good experience with the kids, was bit of a rush as wanted to spend under 2.5 hours on site. Prepare to easily spend up to 4 hours for fuller coverage. The old movies theatre was a nice experience, with truly olden days black and white movie playing and a live person playing the semi automatic movie piano... interactive steam engines section. Small space vehicle section. The future park area charge at $28 per person is bit pricey for entrance fee alone and have alloted entry time. Seems like a basic 'Vivid' light show version. After entering, most areas seen dark: kids lit ball play area, interactive jumping flow on floor and a variant colourful slide area (most popular with kids). Lit areas are for mostly for colouring (animals/teens) and able to scan coloured pictures and load onto walls. Interactive play area to position different blocks on changing projected background onto the large surface (interesting for kids). Got the annual pass for family $115 pa includes entry Sydney Observatory plus powerhouse museum castle hill. Normal entry $11 per adult

Always a fun time at the Powerhouse particularly if you make the effort to check out the major displays they host. The last three have had our three kids (4yrs up to 12yrs) interested and engaged with the activities. We feel the membership is a great option to get value out of multiple visors throughout the year. The cafe sells a nice range of food and drinks, from snacks to meals, and the Members Lounge is a nice place to take a break and have a cuppa on a full day exploring the many levels of exhibits.

Never get tired of this place... I'm so glad that I'm bringing my own kids here to see displays that I saw when I was their age... The Boulton Watt Steam engine is captivating, and to walk into the Turbine Hall and see the Catalina flying boat suspended from the ceiling.... Awesome!!!😍😍 My son and I were just talking about the Apollo Moon missions the other day and it was great to be able to show him a real Moon Rock and the F1 engine. Today we also visited the limited time only Future Park exhibit, pretty wicked I must say. :-) Great job Powerhouse Museum.

Amazing environment for a family weekend. My science loving son really enjoyed it and I felt I had a quality time myself. Of course there is room for improvement. I'd give it a 5 star if it was to the standards of somewhere like California Academy of Science in San Francisco but comparing to Sydney size and position, I think it is one of the best destinations for this city. Their rather expensive light show seemed not very scientific so we skipped it. Maybe I'll try it later and share my opinion on that part.

What an amazing place!! One can spend an entire day with kids, doing so many activities. The museums were never so much fun when I was a kid. Great, interactive concept to involve young kids, play and learn. The concept is so good that even adults thoroughly enjoy it.

This is a pretty good museum for all ages that offers a bunch of awesome things to see. This includes awesome activities like making electricity and a room where it feels like you are in a space shuttle with zero gravity. Also every now and then they have an exhibition or too, a few years back I went to a gaming one.

The place and the exhibits are very interesting. My personal favorite was the space section. What I personally didn’t like was that the exhibits are mashed together (especially on the third floor) without theme. So you can walk through design exhibit and suddenly got into space or public transport or ecology and so on.

This was one of the most enjoyable museums I've been to. A varied number of displays that reflect the progress of humankind in its innovation and creativity. Suitable for all ages, particularly for children as a large amount of displays had interactive components. However the sheer number of children was probably a negative during my time there. Highlights would have to be the steam and space exhibits, some of them are massive. Plenty of information to go along with them, it was too much for over 2 hours.

An awesome fun day. There's tonnes of interactive activities for the kids and us big kids too! You learn without even knowing it and I would definitely go back again. Take you time when you go through it to fully experience everything, they've got some great art too.

It is a shame that developers intend to move this wonderful Museum to an outer city place that is marshy and not on the tourist track. The documents regarding this matter have so far not gone public, despite requests. The volunteers are charming and well trained, the exhibits many, varied and fascinating. Not cheap, but we spend an entire day there at at time and never regret it. Go while you can.

After convincing (although under protest) my 8 year old's that we were going to the Powerhouse Museum, they had such a great time, that after 5+ Hours the staff essentially had to kick them out as it was closing time. Just spend a little time at each exhibit explaining the background and allowing them to try the myriad of hands-on activities and they will be hooked. Highly recommend it. Best parking is available a little way down the street and discount is validated at the machine at the counter in the Shop. Food at the Cafe is reasonable. Add a quick trip to Darling Harbor and the day it complete.

Perfect weekend activity, especially with kids. Plenty to see and do here and a tonne of interactive exhibits for the kids to play with including lego, magnets and much more. There are staff placed throughout the museum with other fun activities for kids to try. The steam and space exhibits are very interesting and as a whole the museum is just as much for adults as kids. The cafe is nice, plenty of seating and there is an excellent gift shop. Worth a visit!

Most definitely a worthwhile museum to visit. The standing exhibitions require two visits to fully take in, if you are actually reading all of the item descriptions. The museum regularly has temporary exhibits of quite varied subject matter throughout the year and I think manages to find a good balance of appeal to adults and children.

What an amazing day out. I thought we'd kill 2 hours keeping the little one amused. We walked in at 10am and out 6 hours later. Just the space exhibit and science area she spent over an hour in. Fully worth the entry fee. The exhibition about computers and technology is very interesting.
Clare MurrayJul 16, 2018
We visit the Powerhouse at least twice a year, sometimes more if there is a special exhibit. It is a great place to take the family. The exhibits are fun and interactive. I recommend taking public transport: the museum is about 5-10 minutes walk from Central Station via a direct walking path that includes tunnels.
