Taronga Zoo is a zoo located in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, in the suburb of Mosman, on the shores of Sydney Harbour. The opening hours are between 9:30Â a.m. to 5 p.m. Taronga is an Aboriginal word meaning "beautiful view".
It was officially opened on 7 October 1916. Taronga Zoo Sydney is managed by the Zoological Parks Board of New South Wales, under the trading name Taronga Conservation Society, along with its sister zoo, the Taronga Western Plains Zoo in Dubbo.
What a lovely zoo, after you manage to actually get in the place. We came by ferry with a stroller and there is not an accessible ramp to the gondola from the ferry area. You have to walk all the way to the entrance, wait in line to have your prepaid ticket checked, and then walk an inclined walkway back to the gondola entrance. For a simple Monday morning, this process took 45 minutes. The gondola was stroller friendly and both kids loved the view! Once we were off the gondola, we saw a sign advertising the owl experience in front of the gift shop. We popped in to see about tickets. They told us the price, but that it was all the way back on the other end of the zoo and that they don't actually sell tickets in there. You have to go to another building. Once you leave the store, you pass through another ticket/stamp checking area. Once we were in the zoo, we had a great time. Accessibility to some of the animals meant we needed to take large detours, but it was otherwise smooth going. Loved seeing the penguin feeding and the seals practicing!

Take the ferry to the zoo and get on the bus that takes you to the zoo entrance. Get your tickets, have a coffee at the cafe or a snack if you are hungry. Make sure you have ample time if you are planning to see all the animals. Walk around the zoo and enjoy. Lots of animals. Some I never saw before and some you could sit there for quite sometime and enjoy their playfulness. Start at the top and end up at the souvenir shop from where you can head back to the ferry. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Water filling stations are available if you do not want to buy bottled water.

I enjoyed the zoo. Easy access by ferry, it's better to buy a zoo ticket at Circular Quay Wharf 4 before you get on the ferry. That way you can get straight on the cable car near the ferry port when you arrive, rather than having to walk up to the ticket booth and back again at the zoo. Some exhibits closed for upgrades when I went, which is good as it means improvements and I'll definitely be back when they have everything open again. Excellent views of the city from within the zoo.

Although i would prefer to see the animals in the wild, it's good to see that Taronga zoo has a strong focus on rehabilitation and education. It is important for people living in cities to realize the impact they have on this planet and all the creatures and critters living on it. The Bird Show was incredible, highly recommend finding the showing time and watching it. The two presenters explained how some of these birds were found with broken wings, unable to fly, and now they are swooping around and looking healthy. Throughout the park they also explain the dangers of one use plastics and how we need to be aware of the impact we are having on our environment. All in all, it was a great time. I also recommend seeing the platypus.

I highly recommend the daily elephant wash, although it's not listed in the zoo's What's On list (happened around 11.45am when I went - ask a staff member for times or if it's on). I really like the Taronga zoo, they have a nice variety of animals. I really like the penguin encounter, where you get to hand feed the little penguins (only 4 tickets per day, so I recommend arriving a little early). I was surprised with the food court. A bit of variety and pricing is alright. Also, there are lots water refill stations - great for a hot day! Overall, the views are amazing and I'll definitely be coming back to Taronga zoo!

An amazing experience... I would recommend travelling to the zoo by bus and then taking the skylift down to the ferry for your journey out. Great variety of animals. Staff are super friendly. Food options are a bit limited so pack a lunch with you and enjoy it in one of the many parks that dot the map. Be there at 11.30 to see the feeding of the gorillas and a show at 14.00 on seals and penguins.

Mediums sized zoo with city view! The exhibits here r in good number to occupy half your day. The trails r organized n easy to follow n staff r friendly n helpful. I felt that the exhibits were rather ordinary, I was more impressed with other zoos in other countries in the same region (Taiwan, Singapore)

Lots of animals, easy access, spacious enclosures, interesting talks, free cable car from the bottom of the hill to the top, food options aren’t too bad, great day out for the family. Parking can be expensive so consider the bus or ferry. There is not a lot of shelter if it rains. Good picnic areas to stop for lunch with great views of Sydney over the water.

Beautiful place spend time by looking at animals. Lot of species and huge area. Well maintained and clean. Love the each and every animals. It is huge area you might need whole day to roam around. Recommend to take pass and go in installment visit. Not suitable to parents who carry their kids with one day pass. Go visit and have fun with your family.

The best part about this zoo is the view! Also the ferry ride over has a fantastic view of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera house. But your tickets online and use the Opal card for the public Ferry to get the cheapest deal, although heaps of places on the wharf try to scam you out of a few extra dollars to take you there. The zoo's layout isn't the most easy to navigate and involves a bit of retracing your steps, also be prepared for a lot of up and downhill walking. In general though it's a good zoo but definitely not the best out there.

We love visiting and revisiting the zoo (despite the crowds, which can be a bit overwhelming at times!), so zoo membership is good value for us. This is also good as we don't like to feel pressed for time trying to see everything every time. There are always new enclosures being developed to keep things interesting for the animal residents and visiting humans alike. You can learn a lot too - plenty of educational materials are posted around the zoo and the keeper talks at feeding times are informative. Food can be pricey, but I think the quality has improved in recent years (and there are plenty of picnic spots where you can eat something you brought yourself).

Loved the experience! The gondola ride up to the top is well thought of. From there, it's an easy descent. The reptile section captures the unique species found in Australia. The tiny penguins were my favourite as they were playful even from across the glass. Loved the overall experience. Good learning and experience for everyone.

Get to see the Australian wildlife and birds with some good information about their peculiarities. This zoo has a wonderful view of the Sydney harbour. Also one gets to see and get information about wild life and birds in other regions of the world. The recreation of the national park at Sumatra, Indonesia with the tigers is worth seeing. Ideal place to visit with children.

This was the first time I saw a giraffe up close and personal, when it licked off my spectacles. The friendly zoo keepers did retrieve it and handed it back after a thorough cleaning.

A very family oriented both local and tourists attractions. Most staff are friendly and helpful. Due to the location, try to go there by public transport if possible ( it is the idea of the Zoo too is to preserve the nature, hope it is not aim for profit). In special events or peak the area can be very chaotic, it may take you half an hour to travel down the street. Like the last night of Vivid Sydney .With limited car park nor much on street , it may take you a while to park. Be a member of the Zoo, will entitle you lots of benefits including some other Zoo . But do read the fine print, some conditions apply and sure not include special events like Vivid Sydney which is not mentioned on their website.

Great day even in the rain. We had light drizzle for most of the day, but still had a great day. We sought out shelter at various enclosures to escape when the rain picked up. Cable car requires most prams to be collapsed down so prepare and be ready to fold it up. Wide range of animals and exhibits and noticeable changes since we were here 2 years ago.

Great variety of animals, enclosures look nice and well cared for, and you get SO CLOSE to the animals it's amazing! There is a wallaby habitat you can walk through with no cage between you and the animals. They are very chill. Definitely take the cable car for beautiful views of the harbor and the zoo from overhead. It takes you straight over the elephants.

Taronga zoo is a must see on a trip to Sydney. The ferry ride to Taronga offers excellent views of the harbour. I highly recommend going on a sunny day to fully enjoy this. I loved it! The return trip at sunset was simply beautiful. Get an Opal card for all public transport - much more convenient than buying single tickets and the card itself is free. Upon alighting at Taronga, you can either take the cable car or a bus to an entrance. You will need to pay via Opal card for the bus, cable car is included in your ticket price if you bought zoo tickets at the wharf at Circular Quay (I highly recommend buying zoo tickets in advance at Circular Quay, this saves alot of time and is convenient).

WOW!! One of the nicest zoos I have ever been to. Got the koala experience, which allows you to get close to a koala, but you don't get to touch it. There are other places that offer this, though. Our son did the Wild Ropes and loved it! The exhibits were well-designed and the animals presented were fascinating. The bird show was fun and you get a free view of Sydney from a prime location. I highly recommend you make Taronga a must do! It will take a full day to enjoy.

The zoo is good for families and groups to spend a couple of hours. The seal show and the movies screenings happen round the day. The tiger trek concept is different. The zoo area is well marked and very clear instructions. The map however is not so clear and accurate. The different sections marking animals of different types makes it good to view. People can feed kangaroos and wallabies there and there is staff available for assistance. Friendly people working there. Sky cable car to go there is also fun and good. If you're lucky you end up seeing elephants and some other animals from the top before you even enter the zoo. The animals are kept behind a fence but this has been done by maintaining their natural habitat like environment around, trying to make them feel at home as much as possible. This is a good thing they have done. Enough places to eat and sit. Some good picnic spots. The zoo is easily accessible by public transport- ferry, trains, bus. It's a day well spent.

Get the app as it's very useful. Allow more than 4 hours to do it all, especially if you have kids. Very good and really worthwhile. Do the shows especially the spider talk - that was fantastic. A lot of things are "being improved" which means closed or relocated. Otherwise it would have been 5 stars. Get the online discount as it's 20% for families, even if you do it on your phone at the gate!

The animals with the best real estate in the world! You take a ferry then a gondola both of which provide fabulous views of the city and an overview of the zoo. Buy tickets online for quick entry. The zoo has interesting native Australian animal exhibits including a kangaroo enclosure where you walk among them! The koalas are so cute! There are also multiple, lovely arboretums!

Awesome zoo. Best part were the birds and then the kangaroo area. You could get pretty close to the kangaroos and an emu. It seemed like half the zoo was under construction, but loved the exhibits that were open. It's such a nice trip to arrive via ferry from circular quay and then meander around. There is a lot to see. There zoo is keep very clean and the shows are great. I was able to see the seal show and it was really cool!
