The Holy Trinity Cathedral of Tbilisi (Georgian: თბილისის წმინდა სამების საკათედრო ტაძარი Tbilisis cminda samebis sakatedro tadzari), commonly known as Sameba (Georgian: სამების ლავრა for Trinity), is the main cathedral of the Georgian Orthodox Church located in Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia. Constructed between 1995 and 2004, it is the third-tallest Eastern Orthodox cathedral in the world and one of the largest religious buildings in the world by total area. Sameba is a synthesis of traditional styles dominating the Georgian church architecture at various stages in history and has some Byzantine undertones.
The idea to build a new cathedral to commemorate 1,500 years of autocephaly of the Georgian Orthodox Church and 2,000 years from the birth of Jesus emerged as early as 1989, a crucial year for the national awakening of the then-Soviet republic of Georgia. In May 1989, the Georgian Orthodox Patriarchate and the authorities of Tbilisi announced an international contest for the "Holy Trinity Cathedral" project. No winner was chosen at the first round of the contest when more than a hundred projects were submitted. Finally the design by architect Archil Mindiashvili won. The subsequent turbulent years of civil unrest in Georgia deferred this grandiose plan for six years, and it was not until 23 November 1995, that the foundation of the new cathedral was laid.

Biggest Orthodox cathedral in Caucasus region, was built in 2004, but they started construction somewhere 2000. View of Old Tbilisi from cathedral is beautiful. I suggest to go there around sunset time.

Beautiful cathedral with outstanding views of the city and surrounding area. This is an active church and regularly has services. It is a popular destination and can get crowded. There is a dress code to enter the cathedral. No mini skirts, women must cover their heads, etc.

What a beautiful place. It was truly awe inspiring walking through the halls with the echo's of beautiful hymns. Sensationally stimulating. I'm not a religious person, but I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of the short experience.

Great church and very elegant architecture. Interior is not as nice as exterior. Needs a lot of work to attract tourists.

Tbilisi or perhaps whole of Georgia is full of churches. You can pretty much find one church in every area if not couple of them close to each other and then you have one church that stand out and stand tall above all. This Trinity church is certainly the one. It’s a massive structure and very well kept from inside out. We happened to be there when there was some sort of prayers being sung. That made the entire experience even better. It also has some kind of bloody history attached to it. We were informed that the king of that time killed all the labour and engineers so nothing of this sort can be built again. Anyway, it was worth the visit for its history and structure.

Very peaceful and spiritual place to be. Our tour guide told us many interesting pieces of information about signicianf depictions of scenes from the Bible in the church. The presence of some hidden spirit inside you almost seems to be real. Well, it’s real, you just have to see it.

The most beautiful monastery we have seen in all of Caucuses. Stunning architecture and view from outside the monastery.

It was a very historical and magnificent place. I'd suggest you visit this place. One of the places you should definitely see in Tiflis. There are several other churches beside it and there is a very beautiful environment. Men are aware that they can not go in with shorts

One of the highest orthodox cathedral in the world is Trinity from Tbilisi. Worked in stone, with impressive architecture and many underground levels, each one having direct gate to the garden organized in terraces, will satisfy you eyes. Dear tourist, put in your plan to visit that monument and you will not regret.
