Aladzha Monastery (Bulgarian: Аладжа манастир) is a medieval Orthodox Christian cave monastery complex in northeastern Bulgaria, 17 km north of central Varna and 3 km west of Golden Sands beach resort, in a protected forest area adjacent to the Golden Sands Nature Park.
The monastery caves were hewn into a 25-m high vertical karst cliff near the upper edge of the Franga Plateau on several levels. The complex includes two small nearby catacombs.
Great place to visit. Very interesting. Beautiful. Love it.

Very interesting place to visit, although could become quite crowded during tourist season. The forest around is beautiful and worth a walk if you want to take a breather from the busy city. Definitely go to the catacombs, they are located about 700m from the monastery and a lovely forest path leads to them.

Very limited and inflexible option of payment for international tourists. No credit card or other currency like Euro accepted (unlike other attractions in Bulgaria which do at least accept Euro as courtesy). The woman behind the ticket counter not very friendly nor helpful, stating only cash Bulgarian Lev accepted.

Well really it's just a few caves in the face of a 50 metre cliff. But they're very well presented with charming gardens and a little museum. And the cell at the top has a sea view. I guess in the evenings there's some sort of audio visual presentation with projections against the cliff. Monkish music pumped around the gardens adds to the atmosphere. There are lots of steps so it's not for those whose movement is challenged. Also, I imagine at peak season there will be constant tour groups, three coaches arrived and departed in the hour or so I was there. I walked from Golden Sands but it's a hike alongside first a busy road and then a bendy one with no sidewalk.

The monastery and museum are definitely worth a visit. The museum is informative and has a good amount of English-language information as well as a variety of mosaics and icons. The monastery itself is a must see for anyone interested in monastic life, early Christianity, archaeology, and/or architecture. The views were also incredible.

It's just some steps after natur park/bothanical garden. Worth to visit if you aim to explore Varna. If you wish to get there from the city by bus, go into 409, but be warned that there isn't a road for walkers, therefore, for eldery people and in a winter the way on foot can be dangerous.
