A gloriette (from the 12th-century French gloire meaning "little room") is a building in a garden erected on a site that is elevated with respect to the surroundings. The structural execution and shape can vary greatly, often in the form of a pavilion or tempietto, more or less open on the sides.
The largest and probably best-known gloriette is in the Schönbrunn Palace garden in Vienna. Built in 1775 as the last building constructed in the garden according to the plans of Austrian imperial architect Johann Ferdinand Hetzendorf von Hohenberg as a "temple of renown" to serve as both a focal point and a lookout point for the garden, it was used as a dining hall and festival hall as well as a breakfast room for emperor Franz Joseph I. The dining hall, which was used up until the end of the monarchy, today has a café in it, and on the roof an observation platform overlooks Vienna. The gloriette's decorative sculptures were made by the famous Salzburg sculptor Johann Baptist von Hagenauer. The gloriette was destroyed in the Second World War, but had already been restored by 1947, and was restored again in 1995, when its central part was closed with glass panes and converted to a café.

I booked the Sunday morning breakfast with my wife. Very tipical building dated back in '800s; piano bar, tasty canapes, very good service and clean toilets. Breathtaking view of Schonbrunn Palace. Warmly suggested.

Worth the 5-10 min climb (and freely accessibly). Once you reach the top, you are rewarded with a wonderful view of Vienna.

Nice walk up the hill, from where you have a great view of the city. Gloriette is a peculiar building which hosts a small café today.

Amazing ! We did the grand tour. If you need to choose 1, I suggest choosing the Sisi Tour in Hofburg. Doing both is nice in any case

Fabulous venue and setting (5*) but overpriced drinks in the cafe. €5.80 for a 'large' hot chocolate, if it was a large I dread to think what the regular one looked like for €5.

Some good other reviews so won’t repeat. The walk up to the bottom level and cozy cafe is free. You only need a ticket ( included in Classic) to go upstairs to the viewing platform. The wooded areas either side are big so you can do long walks.

The Gloriette offers a really great view of the Schönbrunn Palace. Historically serving as a place for dining, the Gloriette now is a tourist attraction. The structure sits atop a hill and is really well maintained. There is a pass to visit the gallery at the top of the Gloriette, but the tickets are to be bought at the entrance of the Palace, so if you’re planning to visit the gallery on top of the Gloriette, be sure to get he tickets at the counters near the Palace. The hike up to the Gloriette is a picturesque one. One can choosing from using the gravel paths or the ones through the tree cover. I tried both and found the path through the forest more enjoyable, albeit a little challenging. That path offers little alcoves with clearings where one can find table and chairs to sit and/or eat or just relax in the laps of nature. The lawns around the Gloriette offer a romantic and scenic site, especially in the evening as the sun begins to set. Do take some time to sit on the lawns and admire the nature. I hope you have a good time, just like I did!

This is my fovourite cafe in the entire city because of the amazing view it has to offer. I tried a lot of deserts when I was there, all quite delicious. It could use some cleaning and a more stylish interior arrangement, as it has a lot of potential. The seats near the windows have the best view. However, the thing I like most about this place is the top view. You can see almost all of Vienna. I ended up spending a few hours just sitting on a bench, listening to music and enjoying the vista and the cool breeze. As a final word, I think it is a place everyone passing through Vienna must visit.

When you buy tickets to visit Schunburn Palace in Vienna, also buy tickets for the royal gardens. It is huge, amazingly beautiful, and a must visit to spend hours sitting with loved ones, family, friends. You have to walk uphill to reach to Gloriette, from where you can get amazing view of the Palace. Don't miss this. Spend some time there, and take pics.

Be prepared for the walk especially if it's hot as there is little to no shade however it's totally worth it as one gains a fantastic view of the city. Pack a small picnic to enjoy at the top with a view otherwise there is a restaurant inside if one wants food and beverages. I'm not sure about the prices as I never went in.

Really nice place for having a good view from the whole garden, palace and also a lot of the city. The walk to get there is enjoyable, through the trees and also many fountains and statues, right in front there is a small lake. There's a coffee in the gloriette and also many benches to sit to admire the view. You can buy a ticket to get up, but it's not that high and the ticket is only sold at the main entrance. I don't think it's worth it unless you buy the complete ticket with access to everything.

I was subjected to racist behaviour by the waiter - Mr. Roland - who was also the manager of this place. I had to call him at least 6-7 times - he made eye-contact - but ignored me each time. Finally when we ordered "warm apfel strudel" with ice cream, he brought cold apple strudel. On asking him why it wasn't warm, he said it wasn't supposed to be as that would melt the ice cream. When we showed him the text on the menu, he said he knew what the text stated. He warmed it up, and brought it back. I told him that his behaviour seemed racist, only to be shocked by his response: "that's okay, I don't want anything to do with you". When I asked for the manager, it was told to us that he was the manager. He asked us to pay the bill and leave.

Amazing Views and decent strudel. Reward yourself with a walk up to it from the gardens... reward comes in the form of great views and in the food. Service is quick. Recommend the apple strudel with cream.

Well made, monumental place which shows the glory of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Once upon a time the place was carefully selected in order to reveal astonishing view to Vienna's central part of the city. Now it still has the past time glory and beauty standing over the park.

The main part of the building is free to enjoy. Only roof is accessible with ticket only. The roof serves as a view point and nothing more. Not really worth paying ticket since the view from the 'free part of Gloriette is also magnificent. It is worth to take time and rest there. It is very beautiful

Beautiful building with stunning view over Shönbrunn and Vienna beyond. We had a lovely lunch and a beer inside the main room, good food and not overly expensive. The road train there was really warm but saved us a long hot walk to this building.
