The Monastery of Serra do Pilar is a former monastery located in Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal, on the opposite side of the Douro River from Porto. The monastery is situated on an outcrop overlooking the Dom Luís I Bridge and the historic centre of Porto. Together with these locations, the monastery was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996. The monastery is notable for its church and cloister, both of which are circular.

It's a bit of a challenge to get up there, but its worth the visit. A former monastery, you have to join a tour to see the inside. Most visitors just visit to see the view of the city, Douro River and Dom Luis Bridge.

Easy access and excellent views of Porto. Not the fanciest place to go for a touristy meal, but close enough to port cellars

Little bit hard to come up but from there, when weather is nice - the best place for panoramic photos of Porto!!! When is windy or, plus rainly, place where you do not want to be!

A monastery overlooking the city of Porto that is more of a tourist site. Well worth the visit to watch the sunrise or sunset over the city.

Great lookout point over the city and worth the walk up there.

The views from the Dome terrace are nice, but the guide of the mandatory guided visit was rude and completely disinterested in the patrimony she was supposed to promote... She was as unpleasant as the reception agent, who made us feel most unwelcome. Dismal atmosphere, which is nonetheless a necessary evil if you want to enjoy the beautiful views of Porto from up there

In spite of the name "monastery", do realise that in Portugal quite several buildings don't belong to Catholic Church, hence they are treated as a "historical building". Therefore, you must pay to visit. There aren't services nor celebrations. This is the case of this one, fact why I left 3 stars.
