A MASSIVE statue of "The Motherland Calls" on the Mamayev Kurgan height, commemorating the Battle of Stalingrad. The closer you are going, teh bigger and bigger it is becoming. Interesting fact: The length of the sword is 33 metres.

Construction The Motherland Calls is highly complex from an engineering point of view, due to its characteristic posture with a sword raised high in the right hand and the left hand extended in a calling gesture. The lead sculptor was Yevgeny Vuchetich, and Nikolai Nikitin handled the significant structural engineering challenges of the huge sculpture. The technology behind the hollow statue is based on a combination of prestressed concrete with wire ropes structure, a solution which can be found also in another work of Nikitin's, the super-tall Ostankino Tower in Moscow. Measurements When the memorial was dedicated in 1967 it was the tallest sculpture in the world, measuring 85 metres (279 ft) from the tip of its sword to the top of the plinth. The plinth measures another 2 metres (6.6 ft), and is installed on a concrete foundation with a depth of 16 metres (52 ft). The figure measures 52 metres (171 ft), and the sword 33 metres (108 ft). The monument weights over 8,000 tonnes (7,900 long tons; 8,800 short tons). The statue contains 5,500 tonnes of concrete and 2,400 tons of metal structures, the sword itself weighs 14 tons. Dedication Two hundred steps, symbolizing the 200 days of the Battle of Stalingrad, lead from the bottom of the hill to the monument. The statue appears on both the current flag and coat of arms of Volgograd Oblast. Marshal of the Soviet Union Vasily Ivanovich Chuikov is buried in the area of the monument, as is famous Soviet sniper Vasily Zaytsev, who killed 225 Axis soldiers in the battle of Stalingrad. The monument was inspired by the Ancient Greek sculpture the Winged Victory of Samothrace, and was modelled on a local woman, Valentina Izotova. Together with the Rear-front Memorial in Magnitogorsk and Warrior Liberator in Treptower Park, Berlin, the monument is a part of a triptych.

can we feel the scale of the tragedy and heroism of the Soviet people during the great Patriotic war? Mamaev Kurgan. the larks sing, it's like weeping over the grief of all mothers whose sons and daughters were devoted to their military duty. and it does not matter on which side the soldiers fought. they paid the most valuable-their lives. and let the descendants know, let them feel, let them cry. we thank you for our peace. for what we hear singing lark, for the sun and freedom, for life!

The Motherland Calls is one of the world’s tallest statues, rivaling New York’s Statue of Liberty in height (and is, in fact, larger in size than Lady Liberty). Situated in Volgograd (formerly Stalingrad), on the left bank of the Volga River, The Motherland Calls is a ginormous work of art, honoring the enormous sacrifices of the “Heroes of the Battle of Stalingrad.” This behemoth sculpture, perched atop Mamayev Kurgan Hill, depicts a woman raising her massive steel sword skyward, which in addition to being a sight you’ll never forget, just might serve as a fierce deterrent to any foreign army thinking about messing with the people of Volgograd ever again.

A great MUST Visit spot if you ever visited the city of Volgograd in Russia The statue which is considered the biggest female statue in the world is in the center of the area which is full of other statues and other great things to see and have some lovely photos. The spot is advised to be visited near sunset as its a long walk in the sun , and also best to do it to start it from up to down , not the other way round.
