The Haus des Meeres (HdM, English: House of the Sea) is a public aquarium in Vienna, Austria. It is located in Esterhazy Park in downtown Mariahilf district, one block south of the busy Mariahilfer Straße. The Haus des Meeres houses over ten thousand aquatic beings on an area of around 4,000 square meters (43,000 sq ft) inside a tall concrete flak tower built during World War II. In 2012 the Haus des Meeres attracted a record high of 436,500 visitors. The Haus des Meeres is managed by Aqua Terra Zoo, a private non-profit organization which, according to its web site, receives only marginal financial support from municipal authorities. However, the maintenance costs for the former flak tower are paid by the taxpayer.

We visited on a Sunday afternoon, and although the line consisted of families with young children, we reached the ticket office very quickly. If we had bought the ticket online, we could have skipped the line altogether. The place was magnificent. There were a lot of fish!! My expectations were a bit limited because I thought the building was too small for anything grand. But boy, was I wrong. On each floor, new layouts and themes were revealed, allowing you to live the thrill of discovery. I felt like a little kid again. Bonus historic room at the top floor, bonus x2 lovely Vienna skyline at the top floor. I highly recommend, although the price is a bit too much (18.5 euros per adult) and a bit too crowded in the weekend. A great place to go with your kid, but a good time for zoo lovers. See their website for more details.
HIGHLY recommended!!! Free flying, tropical birds, bats, monkeys... Scorpions, crocodiles (not roaming freely!) and lots and lots of fish and other sea and fresh water creatures. The icing on the cake is the platform right at the top (more than nine stories high I think) from which the view over Vienna is fantastic. Seemed a bit pricey (payed 18 euro) but easily more than worth the money! ❤️🤗
What a good destination! I enjoyed the fishes, turtles, snakes, frogs, birds, reptiles BUT also what must be one of the best views on Vienna. On the down side, you cannot just get to the restaurant on top of the building to enjoy the view over the city, you have to get a ticket to the aquarium.
Always worth a visit if you've got a few hours to spare. Make sure to head to the top floor for some breathtaking views of the city.
Aquarium has lots of interesting animals, the view from the caffe on top is astonishing, just a lot of sharks though, thus 4* :) Tickets around 20€, have a lot of discounts but keep in mind that the ones for students and seniors are not valid on saturdays, sundays and austrian holidays.
Beautiful place where you can spend whole day. With kids or without them it is very interesting and definitely worth to see in Vienna. Also nice for babys.
REALLY MUST GO, especially if you have children. Quite interesting, it's worth it. Take time to learn things. EXCELLENT the view from its terrace. TIP. Do not drop it like us who visited it with the backpacks. It has lockers to leave your stuff and especially the jackets because it has very hot inside.
It was very interesting and nice. We were here with my family. Very interesting and high build. :) I think his one is better if is Tropicarium in Budapest, but this one is expansive. But this one is suitable. Very nice was turtle, and Octopus, meduse, for me :) All the best, maybe in the future.
Very cool place. We went there for the sharks but the tropical forest was nicer for my kid as the monkeys and birds are free and they can come to you. Recommend for all ages.
It was cool to be there. The place is big but you won't feel it when inside because the aquariums are well organized. You can find almost any well-known marine life here.
This was one of the best experiences I had! Truly recommend it to anyone. There are two giant terrariums where you can walk among the animals (monkeys, birds tortoises). Amazing!
I always pity the animals in such places. Otherwise the place is great, though crowded. It takes some time to buy tickets, so maybe better buy tickets online. There is a pretty coffehouse in the attic floor, which I'd recommend. You definitively shouldn't miss the view from there! The zoo is a great place for kids I guess, but not only them :)
I was wondering if it’s worth it to go but it was a great experience. Many species interesting places. The aquarium is not the biggest one but is a great option for a rainy day, has good view of the city from the top, funny mini jungle inside. I loved it!
The tour we had was very interesting, even for teenagers. I had hardly ever seen them so interested in something this unusual for teens. The view at the roof top is amazing, by the way. If you're there, make sure to make your way to the very top.
It is really worth to visit this place! The panorama is amazing at the 11th floor, where there is also a bar. The zoo is not huge, but absolutely super! The tiny monkeys and the bats are awesome and all the aquariums are beautiful!
This is actually a really underrated sight in Vienna and a beautiful project. Situated in one of Vienna's Flak Towers, Anti-Aircraft gun towers erected by the Nazis in plain WWII, it now houses an amazing aquatic zoo and attracts tons of families. It's a great choice if you are in Vienna with kids. I'd recommend to get an online ticket upfront, as it let's you skip the line. Otherwise you should plan in quite some time queuing up for your tickets, especially on weekends. For locals a yearly ticket surely pays off, as you can also skip the line and just hop in for an hour. However, if it's a one time visit with kids and you want to get the most out of it, it's probably smart to take the elevator up and walk down again. The view from upstairs is amazing and in some parts of the zoo, you'll also find birds and monkeys.
The view from the rooftop cafe is great and the history behind the building quite interesting. If you're visiting for just a couple of days, you will find something more interesting to do. But if your stay in Vienna is a bit longer, it's worth a visit.
Excellent place, especially for kids. You can see many creatures, in two aquarium you can touch fishes and fill the sense of touching them... Also you can use roof as a panoramic view of city
Well made attraction, liked the design of the building. The place is usually crowded, there is a queue for the tickets, but acceptable. Nice panorama on the top of the building.
Wonderful place to visit with Kid's and family. Famous for tourists visitations. And make sure not to miss the breath taking view from the 11th floor. This is like Icing on the cake. Don't miss the view. Check the photos for proof.
The place has many different interesting species of animals, birds, reptiles, fishes and insects. I especially enjoyed the open jungle like area with monkeys, birds and tortoises in the open.. If you have time in Vienna and are interested in animals then this place is for you..
Not as much animals as I thought, but there are much opportunity to touch and feel closely with fish and monkeys. On top you can see quite a fat view of whole Vienna. Had a lot of fun. Price is quite high, but considering the animals who spent their life for it. It's not that much in fact.
Interesting place for family trips. A lot of species of animals and special events on certain times, like feeding sharks at 3 pm. Cafe is very expensive so bring your own food and drinks. The last floor has a good view of Vienna. But I was somewhat disappointed as sharks weren't too big and there were no octopuses.
